"This way." I took Tiffani by the hand and led her towards the hedgeway. "It's over here."

Tiffani looked up at Marlowe with a confused expression on her face but allowed herself to be led - to somewhere. "A peek into the past, huh?" Again another seemingly paranoid look behind her. "So what you're saying is that other Changelings have been here before us? And, uh, didn't fare too well? What if it was the townspeople getting rid of the local Changelings? You know how these kinds of towns can get - kind of like how people used to lock disabled people in their attics, ya know?"

She has to skip a few times to keep up with Marlowe, his gait somewhat longer than hers. "Anyway, what I want to tell you I think has to do with this. I mean, it could be a red herring - I dunnae for sure. But ... I think there's something dodgy with the priest."

Marlowe seemed pretty intent on finding - well - whatever he was looking for. She wasn't really sure what, but she decided she would have to explain to him what had happened with the priest some other time.

"Well ... I guess I'll be in the park so ... you know where to find me."

She stopped for a moment, then turned around and began heading in the opposite direction - toward the park.

"This way." I took Tiffani by the hand and led her towards the hedgeway. "It's over here."

Behind the plaza is a maintenance shed. It looks pretty new, sitting in a corner next to the dumpster. A bunch of trolleys have been abandoned beside the dumpster—plaza employees bringing out the day’s trash and leaving the trolley instead of taking it back. You can feel the Hedgeway. It’s attached to the shed door.

"Alright. I'll catch up with you, Tiffani. We'll talk about everything. I promise."

I eyed the door for a long moment.

There is a sliding bolt. The construction appears to be one of those pre-fabricated aluminium numbers that you assemble yourself. The door has a slide bolt to keep it latched, but doesn’t appear to be locked.

Just a peek. That's all I wanted. Carefully, I approached, opened the way and stepped through.

In the mundane world, the corn is quickly being harvested. The same cannot be said of the Hedge. The ears are heavy on the ghost stalks, beginning to droop. That red fluid, scarlet as blood, can be seen everywhere now, between the white kernels where the cob is exposed, leaking from splits in the dried ears and trickling down the stems.

I took a look around, seeking any sign of anyone else passing through here.

There have been comings and goings, but you can’t really tell how recently or how frequently.

There is movement amongst the corn. Something’s coming!
