Welcome to Maize, Nebraska; just another bumfuck town out of hundreds along the corn belt of the United States. It’s mid-November, 2020. In larger towns, the harvest started weeks ago, but Maize is waiting. In three days, the harvest will officially begin, ending on Thanksgiving day, this has been the tradition of Maize for a hundred years, and it may well continue to be the tradition for another hundred.
Maize, as the name suggests, is a corn-farming town in southern Nebraska. The primary crop is white corn, which is allowed to dry on the stalk, before being harvested and sold. The white grain, with its near-white husks, has a ghostly, otherworldly appearance, especially at night. It is not a good eating corn, but goes to making corn flour, ethanol, and as an additive to livestock feed. There is no Freehold near Maize, in fact there are no Changelings in the small town at all. The town is old, but not yet dying, having found some degree of success in selling their crop to ethanol producers.
Why are you here? What brought you this tiny, old-fashioned place, at this time of year? The locals are wary of outsiders, superstitious and suspicious. But fell things are happening in Maize, things you must stop. You’re running out of time…
