(D2, LE) Somewhere in the Night

Post by Marlowe Phillips » Thu Jan 16, 2020 11:26 am

Taking a look around the fields wasn't a bad idea. Doing it as a group did not. Some things were still best done alone. Sneaking around the corn after dusk was one of them.

Sure, I've seen a few horror movies. I know it's a bad idea to go off alone. But, more people would be harder to hide and keep track of. Best to take a look around myself, this time.

You head into the cornfields, you don't see anyone, and you don't think anyone has spotted you either. It's dark, and the corn stalks sway, rustling quietly. It makes it hard to properly hear, and you feel vaguely disoriented.

I looked around, trying to find anything unusual. But, all I saw was corn.

You don't see anything, but that doesn't mean there isn't anything to see. You continue to wander, but as you move deeper into the corn, you risk getting lost.

You can't always trust your eyes. That was the first thing I learned in Arcadia. You can't always rely on deduction or reasoning, either. There were other ways to look at your surroundings.

You manage to keep your bearings, though the corn has a strangely uniform look about it, perfect rows growing tall and fruitful, without disease or pestilence.

It was all very errie. I kept expecting a wolf to howl. And, I kept looking around.

Something catches your eye. The ghostly corn is pale, but the rich soil is dark, and even though the bone is dirty, it’s pale colour contrasts well enough against the dirt to draw your gaze. The bone lies half buried near the base of a stalk, a jagged broken end protruding like horse catchers around a castle in a bygone era.

I was never a cop, but I understand the need to be careful with evidence, regardless of what it might be. With a handkerchief, I brushed away the dirt and pulled at the bone.

It's not a small bone, but that doesn't mean much, lots of animals would fall within that size category. It appears to be a femur or humerus, judging by the thickness of the walls and the distinctive "head" designed to fit into the socket of a ball joint.

Roll Intelligence + Investigation. Acute Senses applies. +1 from your CSI Kit. -2 for standing out in a cornfield at night.
