[D2 LA] Pop Up: A Convenient Ally

[Steve]

Temperatures falling, a battered station wagon pulled into the Maize Motel lot. The door opened, and a large, broad-shouldered Changeling unfolded himself from the driver’s seat. Craggy and rough-hewn, the man appeared to be formed of attractive lilac-grey stone, the low-slanted winter sun casting a pearlescent sheen on his skin. He headed into the office, talking to the owner briefly, the older man looking sour about his sudden fortune at this influx of patrons.

Completing their transaction, the stone man pulled his car up in front of one of the basic rooms. Coming around the back, he dropped the tailgate and reached for his duffle bag. He rolled his neck before slinging the bag onto his shoulder, making his way to the door and fumbling with the key for a moment. The locks were all cheap crap, master keyed and worn to the point that any room key would likely open any of the doors; it took some jiggling to get the key to turn as the aged bitting struggled to lift the pins adequately. Finally, the key turned, and the Changeling was able to open the door.

I watched the big man from afar. I was leaning on the Buick, enjoying a smoke. Even out here, lost in the corn, smoking indoors was a thing of the past.

The number of Lost in town was growing. We definitely needed a meeting with everyone.

[Steve]

Feeling eyes on him, the Changeling looked over his shoulder, noted the Lost observing him, noted Marlowe’s demeanour and dress. He tossed the duffle onto the bed from the doorway and turned. Buttressing a broad shoulder against the door frame, he raised a hairless brow, “if you keep staring like that, I’m gonna have to charge admission.”

[Marlowe Phillips]

"You'd have to put on more of a show." I walked over, looking the man over again. Why were so many of us here? "You're probably going to get a lot of stares around these parts. I doubt they've had so many outsiders show up at the same time."

[Steve]

It appeared that the elemental was going to say something, mouth opening a fraction, but nothing coming out. After a moment he shrugged as if he was accustomed to people staring, “is that so?” He glanced about, apparently looking for the other outsiders Marlowe had mentioned.

[Marlowe Phillips]

"There are at least four others, maybe more." I hadn't tracked them all down yet. "So many lost finding their way here."

[Steve]

“It’s not the kind of place one expects to get found,” Steve observed drily, "what brings you here, then?"

"I'm not sure." I admitted. "I heard a few whispers that I should come up this way, but that's about it. I'm not sure what I'm looking for yet. They others mentioned being here for work, but there's probably more to it than that. What about yourself?"

[Steve]

The Changeling doesn't look familiar to you, but his Mask reminds you of someone. You can't quite place where you've seen it before, but it needles at you all the same. "I got some unfinished business I need to wrap up," he stated coldly, narrowing his eyes and studying the detective.

[Marlowe Phillips]

"You've been to Maize before?" I raised an eyebrow.
