It is overcast for your arrival in Maize. The temperature has been falling steadily since nightfall the previous day. A light snow falls during the afternoon, but the clouds break up and drift away overnight. Already a sleepy town, the cold weather and eventual snow keep the streets quiet and empty.

The town has an eerie, deserted feel. It is deafeningly quiet, and every sound you make echoes hollowly around you. There’s a term for this feeling of unease: liminal space. Like an airport, or a school during the holidays, lingering here feels wrong...
