So-called “cold” iron is defined as steel that has not been mass-produced and/or manufactured by machine. This means that the vast majority of steel or “iron” in the modern environment is “safe” for Changelings and Fae to interact with. Any alloy with a Ferrous component lower than 80% is no longer deemed to be “iron” for the purposes of determining whether it acts as a Bane.
Cold iron cannot be entirely concealed from Changelings or Fae, who become aware of the presence of the Bane when they come within a metre of the substance. Coating the surface of the iron, such as by galvanisation or powder coating protects the Changeling from taking Lethal damage upon casually touching the item, but all other penalties apply.
