Merits & Skills

Most Merits from the Chronicles of Darkness and Changeling Rulebooks will be available. Due to certain simplifications (and one over-complication), certain Merits from the Core book have lost their usefulness. Notably:

Choke Hold: This mechanic has been indirectly replaced with the Suffocation Tilt. All characters can attempt to Choke a target if they have established a Hold in a grapple, without needing this Merit.

Grapple (Style): At three dots, a character can follow a successful Joint Lock move with the Choke Move, without needing to establish a Hold first.

Investigative Prodigy: Simplified Investigations do not allow for multiple clues, this Merit will not be available.

Mystery Cult Initiation: Don’t make me do this, please?

Seizing the Edge: The Edge mechanic is not being used, negating the first bonus granted by this Merit. Reduce the cost of this Merit by 1.

Takes One to Know One: Simplified Investigations do not impose this penalty, this Merit will not be available.

Untouchable: The incomplete tag is not being used, this Merit will not be available.

Vice-Ridden/Virtuous: These Merits can still be taken, but apply to your Needle or Thread Anchors instead.

MOTLEY MERITS

Each player may reserve up to 2 Merit dots from character creation to be used at the beginning of the game for Motley Merits. Players may form a temporary Motley by swearing their cooperation until the situation in Maize has been resolved, and spending 1 point of Glamour. Any dots invested into Motley Merits will be refunded at the end of the game, when the Motley is dissolved. Dissolving the Motley by resolving the situation does not constitute Oathbreaking.

Unless otherwise agreed upon by the members of the Motley, all members can access the group’s combined Merits, so long as they have contributed at least one dot to any Motley Merit. For example: if character A contributes one dot to Resources, B contributes two dots, and C contributes zero dots, all three characters have access to Resources •••. The oath made to form the motley represents a deep trust between the members, and abuse of this trust (such as wasting Resources frivolously, or taking advantage of shared Merits while only contributing the minimum) will be punished by the Wyrd accordingly.

SKILLS

Note that the Firearms skill applies to ranged weapons in general—including bows, slings, and thrown objects—as if your skill rank was one dot lower (minimum 0).
