(D5, EM, On the Street) Crossroads

Post by Marlowe Phillips » Sat Jan 25, 2020 5:32 am

The leg still hurt like hell, but I could walk on it, with a severe limp. I figured most of the locals were still tending to the harvest, giving a chance to look around without drawing too much attention. I was looking for any sign any changelings may have left behind, or anything else unusual for the mundane world.

It was a chance meeting, really. Tiffani hadn't expected to run into anyone she had to talk to - because she never did. And her rapport with the locals seemed to be on par with Adolf Hitler, the Ayatollah Khomeini, and Pol Pot (she didn't know the names of more recent villains like Saddam Hussein or Osama bin Laden). By now during her time in Maize, she spoke as little as she had to with the locals fearing she'd be run out of town on a rail simply for existing. Marlowe was one of the few people she felt safe talking to.

Tiffani almost walked past him without saying a word. Then, suddenly, it was as if she remembered who he was at the last second. Her eyes were wider than usual carrying that frightened look of someone caught in the crosshairs - and knew it. She had been walking with her head down, her mass of curls obscuring most of her face - at least until she looked up to see Marlowe.

"Oh, uh ... hello love." She grinned ever so slightly and corrected herself. "I mean Marlowe. Sorry. We call everyone 'love' in Britain. Blokes, anyway. I don't call other girls 'love.'"

She gave that same conspiratorial look across each of her shoulders - like she did in the restaurant a few days earlier. Only this time, those glances looked far more sincere. She moved in close to him. Close enough for Marlowe to wonder if she were coming on to him. Instead, however, she asked, "Can we talk somewhere? It's important. I've been wanting to tell someone this for days, but other than the fight, I've not seen anyone except for Jean. I would have told him - except he was too busy rebuking me as the spawn of Satan. I feel like I'm the only one here aside from the locals."

"I'm always available to talk to, sweetheart." I kept looking around, but stopped to give her my attention.

Tiffani looked at least somewhat relieved - but not completely. She'd been carrying around her suspicion for days but, even in a town as small as Maize, it seemed damn near impossible for half a dozen Changelings to ever see each other. Not even in the motel where everyone seemed to be staying.

"Alright ... but not here in the middle of everything. This place is already dodgy enough without random ears listening in. Somewhere ... hmm ...."

Her eyes narrowed a little - but that only served to make her look more normal and less terrified. She tried to remember a good spot, her prodigious memory coming up with a fairly good place. "How about the park north of here. But not in the park directly. Like ... off to the side ... halfway between the corn and the town so that ears in either place can't hear us."

Then she jabbed a finger into Marlowe's chest in a playful way, but her normally cheeky grin was somewhat weak. "And no jokes about the corn having ears. I might have to hit you. Wait, no ... you said you have a Buick, right? Can we drive beyond this damn cornfield somewhere? And just pull off the road? I'd give one of my eyes to get out of this place even for an hour."

"We could." I nodded. "You caught me while I was looking for something, though. I'm trying to see if our predecessors left anything behind."

"Our predecessors?" Tiffani pushed the hair out of her face as if to see Marlowe more clearly. "I suddenly feel like I'm not in the loop - assuming there is one. I didn't know we had predecessors. Are you saying there were more of ... us ... here in Maize some time ago?"

She looked back down the street from where she had come from as if she was being followed. Again, she moved in (un)comfortably close to Marlowe, this time grabbing his arm with both hands - but gently. "If this is about the shenanigans going on around here, that's what I wanted to talk to you about. But ... I've waited almost 3 days, I guess I can wait longer. I hope."

She seemed to notice she had a hold of Marlowe's arm and quickly let him go. "Oh ... sorry. "

"There was at least one who met his fate here before the rest of us arrived. But, I suspect there were more." I explained. "I don't know that there were any here recently, but there may be signs that they were here, signs only we could see."

"How do you know that?" But then she shook her head one or twice. "No, forget it. Maybe you can tell me later. I won't continue keeping you from whatever you're doing. If you need my help, I'll do what I can. Otherwise ... I dunnae ... I might go to the park. It's where I spend most of my time. The motel is warmer, sure, but if it were any smaller I'd have to sleep sitting up. The walls kinda - start closing in."

"I took a peek into the past." I explained. "I'll go with you to the park, but I think there's something nearby."

You can definitely sense a Hedgeway nearby, it seems to out behind the Plaza.
