(D4, EM, Hollow) Underworld

One common thing about towns in this party of the country was that everyone had a storm cellar. Most folks used it for storage and other things most of the time, but its true purpose was for shelter in the event of a tornado. Even older motels had them and, because of storm unpredictability, they were often kept unlocked. That's where I had chosen to enter the Hedge and begin the construction of the Hollow.

It had been some time since he had traveled to the Hedge. It never brought back the fondest of memories, and it was something he tried to avoid outside of heading to the markets. Still, it was needed for them to establish a foothold in this place for however long they were going to be investigating this area, and he had to be the one to do it. He needed the forge to feel useful again, and there would come a time sooner than later where a well-crafted blade may come in handy.

"Marlowe." Jonathan nods, looking over at the man. "Found a good spot, have we?"

Hedgespinning: Survival or Crafts are the obvious choices to form your Hollow out of the fields of ghost corn. Less obvious choices could include Weaponry to hack down the stalks (requires a bladed weapon of some type), or Expression to encourage emotional shifts in the Hedge itself.

Dramatic Failure on rolls will incite Bedlam, but a standard failure has no effect.

"Jonathan." I greeted him with a nod. "I think it will work, with a little work. Seemed best to stay near the motel."

"Well, that makes as much sense to me. Wouldn't exactly have it there for a main one, but it'll serve its purpose.

The whole area seemed like it was a blank canvas for him to use. Ideas began to float into his head about what he could create here, what could be molded. But it was better he do it alone, so he could concentrate. "I'll tell you what, you go check the paths here, see if they are safe. I'll take care of the construction here. It's sort of my specialty."

"I'll leave it to you, then." I agreed. I wasn't much of a builder. "But, I'm going to stay close. I know at least one changeling was killed in Maize."

"My thoughts exactly. Don't wander off too far. Last thing I need is another body on my conscious ."

He nods with a large grin as he looked upon the nearly empty Hedge once more. It was a look a artist staring at a blank canvas would give.

Navigating the Hedge can be a finicky thing at the best of times, it would probably be prudent to stay close to where the Hollow will be. The Hedge has a way of shifting and changing, and walking only a few yards in one direction could turn into a mile-long walk back without warning. The white corn, much like the mundane world, are heavy on their stalks, and a seemingly endless breeze rustles through them, making a whispering sound.

It didn't take long for him to get started. He put himself into this, focusing hard upon the plains and the corn and without any further distractions surrounding him, he could finally begin.

The fields slowly began to wrap themselves around the the building, giving a sort of roof over their heads. It was quick in the formation, wrapping itself completely. Once the foundation of the Hollow was set, more corn began to rise up and move spinning threads of the stalks into a whirl of motions, creating separate larger areas to maintain. The beauty of this creation was that to those who did not know where to look, the ghost corn still looked natural. It was hidden from the eyes of those who would hunt them down. Pretty ingenious, if you were to ask him.

The foundations continued to be form and soon, so would their comforts. He needed the forge to be made whole again. Before, he felt so useless; a terrible feeling for a Wizened like him. Giving him purpose to craft even in this place was a necessity.

I let the man work. I focused my attention on the entrance. Things seemed safe enough, but that could change quickly. You never knew what might find you in the Hedge.
