[D5 EE] Investigation: Late Arrival

Post by GhostWolfe » Fri Jan 24, 2020 11:55 am

Participants: Unlimited
Contracts: Allowed

In such a tiny town, it can be hard to tell the idle gossip from the things that might be useful. Who is Carrie Washburn, and why do you care that she’s back from her vacation? Perhaps it’s just the minutiae of a town so small that the comings and goings of every person is interesting, or maybe the buzz is a little louder than that.

Choose a timeslot and roll Resolve + (Socialise or Subterfuge).
Additionally, roll Perception (Wits + Composure); do not add these successes to your total.

12 Successes are required to uncover the Clue for this Investigation.
For each participant with 4+ dots in the Skill they used, gain an Element.
For each participant that used an appropriate Specialty, gain an Element.
For every 5 Successes beyond that needed to uncover the Clue, gain an Element.

Tiffani had been spending almost the entire day sitting in the park - the fact that it was warming up to what felt like Hawaiian weather made it much easier for her to do this. She was even able to take her jacket off during the afternoon as long as she didn't wear anything that involved a lot of exposed skin. But her wardrobe was rather limited given the circumstances.

It was early evening, the sun sinking lower into the sky. She could feel the chill returning. Normally she stayed as far away from people as she could - even her fellow Changelings. The dream she had last night haunted her. The fight with the huntsman weakened her. The strange, unknown danger she felt plagued her. The fact that everyone but Marlowe and Imogen was strangling the life out of her. Always gregarious and popular in her old life before Arcadia, it seemed now that people hated her just by looking at her - and she had no idea why. As such, she couldn't fix the problem. Any of those problems.

But today, she strategically placed herself outside on a bench near the "mall" - a loose term if ever there was one - and listened to the conversations as people came and went. Cathy broke her arm during cheerleading practice. Old John Stavenger had to buy a new tractor. Gladys so-and-so fell down on the ice and broke her hip. Susie McWilliams is pregnant - with an unknown father. None of this interested her. Just the idle gossip of lives she knew nothing about, lives she would never be a part of.

Yet she spent hours there - not just listening but also tasting their emotions, looking for any sign of fear, apprehension, dread, or deception. Especially deception. She declined to initiate any conversations, however, figuring she would probably be screamed at from the get-go. Dealing with these locals was a rather fiddly business, she thought, and if not for the oath ... to defend people that seemed to disappear every day doing god knows what. How could she trust people - even her own kind - who were so elusive? Why would she want to risk her own life to protect them?

Imogen didn't know what was the big deal with Carrie Washburn. However, she supposed that she was in a small time and it was the most exciting thing that went on around here. People were close-knit together and likely kept track of what you where you went for dinner or how many times you checked the mail in a week. Back at home, someone disappearing for two weeks on vacation didn't end up on anyone's blip for attention. However, she went along with it and tried to find what was the big deal with Carrie. After hearing about the bones in the field, Lost bones, everything was suspicious.

Trust no one.

Jean didn't have any idea why people were talking about Carrie Washburn, or why she was so important. Clearly she had done something but, no-one he talked to seemed to be willing to explain to him either, at least in any terms he understood. Needless to say, this left Jean all sorts of frustrated, though he the frustration passed easily, the former knight having decided that Carrie was no-one important and that he had no reason to know what she was doing or had done.

EE5 - Late Arrival - Resolve 2 + Subterfuge 3 + Striking Looks 2: 7d10o10h8 1

EE5 - Late Arrival - Perception - Wits 3 + Composure 2: 5d10o10h8 2

It was odd. It started at the Diner during dinner. Then walking down the street. People gossipping just a little louder. It was the excitement, though, that caught Penn's attention.

He'd listen, try to figure out...

Just who the hell is Carrie Washburn?

I listened quietly as others spoke, nudging conversations with a word here and there. Simply listening often got better results than direct interrogation.

They seemed to care about this person, for whatever reason, and knowledge is power, so let's see why this woman is just so damn special for just returning from a vacation...

Spending much of his day in the Hedge, restocking on Goblin Fruits, the Elemental is unable to contribute much to the investigation.

With a total of 10 Successes, you fail to uncover this clue.

Your efforts aren't entirely wasted, as you notice that a number of Maize residents seem particularly invested in the news. You are able to identify Father Henshall and Steven Crabtree, but the others are people you don't recognise.
